Protect your privacy when using AI

A prompt can contain personal information even when it feels like an ordinary example. Pause before you paste.

Content checked against the listed guidance on November 5, 2026.

Share the minimum information needed.

Check the current policy for the exact AI service you use.

Treat copied prompts as data sent to that service.

Remove information that identifies people

Avoid pasting passwords, account numbers, identity documents, private messages, medical records or confidential work material. A name combined with a workplace, location or event can also identify someone.

Replace details with labels such as [CLIENT], [DATE] or [AMOUNT]. Use a fictional example when the real one is not necessary. Do not share someone else’s personal information without a clear reason and permission.

Check the service before using it

AI providers have different privacy terms, settings and data practices, and these can change. Read the current information for the specific service and account you are using. Do not assume a setting from one service applies to another.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada describes privacy-protective principles for generative AI, including limits on collecting and using personal information. For personal use, the simple habit is to share less and check first.

Remember the tool and the AI service are different

HelloAIKit’s public helpers run in your browser and do not send what you type to HelloAIKit. When you copy a prompt into a third-party AI service, that service receives the material you paste; its own privacy terms apply.

If you accidentally shared sensitive information, follow the provider’s current account guidance and your organization’s incident process. A privacy checker can catch some patterns, but it cannot identify every sensitive detail.

Try this prompt

I want help with [GENERAL TASK]. Use these fictional details only: [NON-SENSITIVE EXAMPLE]. Before answering, tell me if any other information is necessary. Do not ask for passwords, account numbers or identifying details.

Concrete example

Sample input

Before sharing: “Please summarize this note about Alex Rivera at 18 Pine Street, account 123456.”

Illustrative output

Safer version: “Please summarize this fictional note about [PERSON] at [GENERAL LOCATION], account [ID].” Remove details that are not needed for the task.

Limitations to keep in mind

A browser-side checker can only spot some recognizable patterns; it cannot determine whether every detail is sensitive or identify every re-identification risk. Review the text yourself and check the specific AI service’s current terms.
